don't remember if I shared this thought here, but I'd make one change in the playoff - you want to give an automatic berth into the playoffs to the conference champions of the four conferences - sec, B1G, Big 12 and ACC? Fine. But not automatic seeding into the quarterfinals. Take them in - great - but have a committee see the 12 or 16 teams for the tournament.
If that were done, the first round becomes the Cinderella round - in search of a Cinderella team. The tournament really begins with the quarter final round the purpose of which is to winnow the field down to hopefully the four strongest teams to make the semi-finals.
I like it also.
Of course there will still be arguments - there always are and they are 'legitimate' in so far as they are what they are about - whatever place you're arguing about. Problem with a committee picking just two teams is then you're arguing over who is really the third best team in the nation. And the third best team has a legitimate chance to win the championship. If you choose the top four, then you're arguing over fifth place.
In basketball, there are still arguments but we're arguing over who should really be #64 - or even #68. Argue all we want, it's unlikely that the injustice we are arguing about is likely to have any effect at all on the championship.
Bottom line, I'd far rather the arguments - or the mistakes if you wish - be about who ought to be #13 (or #17) than about who is really the fourth best team in America this year.
