has the champion of the AAC or the MWC (or what the heck, the Ivy League) "earned it" compared with let's say Ohio State or Penn State of the B1G?

They have certainly earned the chance to play a post season game but the tournament is to choose the best (champion) team of the season. And they ain't in the conversation for that imo.
