I don't see the Democratic Party to turn towards a more sympathetic position on trans people, among other topics, as long as Republicans are using those groups as an object of their perpetual anger and hatred.
They did drift towards a more accepting view of trans people at the outset, immediately following their adoption of gay marriage as a right (which as you note, came after the supreme court decision) mostly as a spillover effect, but crucially *before* the right wing backlash to Drag Queen Story Hour and NCAA athletes. At that point they tried to snap back but couldn't do it fast enough. That's what I'm focusing on. Even when they accidentally find themselves in a positive place (often through passivity), they will change their direction to align with the right on issues. And once they do, they won't move from that spot ... until it becomes absolutely safe to do so ... which usually means the right either also did, or they stopped caring about it.
So I don't see them moving to the left on any issue that the right contests.
Hope that's a more consistent statement on my part.
