The version I've seen quite a bit is the original deal between Biden and Pelosi in 2020 was she will get the Dems to coalese around Biden, who she thought was the best candidate, but it's for one term.

THe longer Biden insisted he wanted to run again the bigger the problem finding the other candidate. Biden chose Harris over Whitmer because he thought Harris would be a better VP, Whitmer was apparently the choice of Pelosi who thought she would be a better CANDIDATE, in 2024, Harris and California were just not popular nationally.

So he gets to 24, freezed in the debate and finally agrees to step aside, but then surprised Pelosi by immediately endorsing Harris before they could get the open convention.

At that point yes the money sitting on the sidelines, because they refused to donate to Biden, came flooding in for Harris so they just went with her. But Pelosi's plan had always been he steps aside, open convention, and if Harris wins she wins, if someone else wins they win.

I still am not sure if Whitmer would have beaten Trump either, I'm convinced there are still millions of people who just are not going to vote for a woman. But I think it's likely she had a better chance tha Kamala did because of her being closer to a bunch of swing states that Harris lost.
