Kevin Plank, founder and CEO of UnderArmour made the deal, not Ucla. Danny just accepted it like he'd kicked over a rock and found a gold nugget. UnderArmor created the deal and then under financial duress and having fired Plank, canceled it---all for UnderArmor reasons. If you think this was a Chip Kelly thing, you don't understand how the world works. UA wouldn't take an 8 figure loss just because they don't like a football coach. Do you see that?

I don't know how the negotiations went, but one can imagine that the price was driven up by counteroffers from Nike, not because of anything Ucla did or had to offer other than geographic proximity to millions of people and millions more on TV.

The value of these contracts for the sponsor is the media exposure, not the win/loss record of the client. Are you kidding me? You don't get this?

The only reason Ucla in particular was the beneficiary was Plank saw that he had no notable presence on the west coast, or LA specifically. Ucla was available and the only uncovered property on the Monopoly board. UA's decision had zero to do with the specifics of Ucla, their current football progress, their coach or their recent record.

Back to the more important topic for us. That Morgan Center went bankrupt proves they can't run a lemonade stand, let alone a modern D1 football program.

Typically, when a company goes bankrupt, if it is allowed to keep operating, it does so under the control of a new lender and...importantly, so write this down with your #2 pencil...under new management.

Ucla allowed Morgan Center to continue operating even after it went insolvent. Ucla stepped in to fulfill the role of new lender. But, mistakenly, Ucla allowed the old, bankrupt management to continue. What's the definition of insanity? Oh, that's right. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

This is how government works, and its how it grows. Ucla is government. No one in government ever gets fired for incompetence. No one at Ucla will get fired for foolishly allowing incompetent management to continue, and we've already seen that no one at Morgan Center is getting fired. We Bruin fans are simply getting government sprawl, not a well run football administration.

Morgan Center should get fired, en masse, and we should obtain a talented football administration. If need be (as it inevitably will), take a private equity partner and get the football program out of Morgan Center entirely.

As is, we will wallow in government service mediocrity. Rinse, repeat, until the emerging business economics of modern D1 football turn the water off for the also-ran mediocrities like Ucla football.

Enjoy them while you still can.
