That said, I’m not overly concerned about their press. We’ve got two true point guards and two off guards who can handle the ball — Gabby has even run the point at times — plus a big in Dugs who’s very comfortable handling it. That group should manage pressure just fine.
What does concern me is Strong and Fudd. Strong in particular is a problem — she’s a monster. Gabby can stay with her on the perimeter, but she doesn’t have much of a chance against her in the post. I’m hoping Dugs can at least slow her down. My bigger worry is their athleticism. They’re excellent at beating defenders off the dribble and stopping for the pull-up jumper, which takes Lauren’s rim protection out of the play.
If I’m Cori, I’m already experimenting with some change-up defenses — anything to show them looks they may not expect. A 2-3 zone, a box-and-one, whatever it takes. We have a veteran, high-IQ group, and that’s something to lean into. In the third game against USC, Cori built the defensive plan around forcing JuJu left. Gabby simply shaded her right side — you’re not coming this way — and the rest of the defense collapsed when she drove deep. It completely disrupted JuJu’s rhythm, and we came away with the win.
