It wasn’t the outcome I had hoped for, but I believe we performed about as well as our potential allowed. That said, it’s also worth noting that Cronin is responsible for recruiting that potential.
I give him a pass for last year, given the ever-changing landscape of college basketball. He took a calculated risk by exploring the European market, and while it didn’t pan out, I don’t fault him for trying. In fact, I respect that he quickly recognized the shortcomings of that approach and adjusted course. Even more impressive is his commitment to fundraising for NIL and promoting the program.
However, concerns remain. Can he retain top players? Can he consistently recruit elite talent? Those are real questions.
I don’t believe he’s on the hot seat just yet, but if next season is a disappointment, that could change. What qualifies as a failed season? That’s debatable, but IMHO UCLA should be competing for championships—both in the conference and nationally. A middle-of-the-pack finish and an early tournament exit would be a problem.
Other factors could complicate things. If, for example, Cronin has a rough season while Mara thrives elsewhere, many will blame him for not keeping a star player. It may not be entirely fair, but it will happen.
Personally, I think coaching moves are driven more by alumni pressure than by the athletic director. Ask yourself this: If Cronin came to you for a major donation to the fund, and that investment turned out to be a waste, how long before you lose faith? Our experience from the Howland era suggests it wouldn’t take long.
