Since I first heard of NIL, I thought that was the solution. I thought it created a great balance. I never thought the schools should pay the athletes directly, because that's going to kill off a lot of non-revenue sports.
Going way off into the weeds, this will have world-wide ripples. People from all over the world use US collegiate women's athletics to develop their Olympic/national team athletes. Tons of players in the last Women's world Cup had played US college ball. Track and field has a lot of athletes that compete or competed at US colleges.
I don't see how the diversion of 10's of millions of dollars per year will not negatively impact non-rev sports.
Another random Q: The women's March Madness is suddenly a hot commodity. If that continues, will money be diverted from that into a player $$ pool?
