Normally, this section takes about an hour and a half to cover, but I gave it seven hours instead. It is easily the most important topic in my entire class.
Only one out of ten people born into poverty will ever break out to become middle class or wealthy. Because of that, I always stress to my students: what is the point of earning a middle-class salary if you don’t know the pathway to middle-class savings and investing? I tell them directly to put their money where rich people put theirs, because that is the only asset class the U.S. government consistently protects.
Even leaders like President Biden have struggled to grasp this disconnect. Despite the S&P 500 making a historic run with consistent gains of over 30%, only about one out of six people actually have their money in the stock market to benefit from it.
He could not understand that this windfall did not impact most voters where as inflation did.
