In the scenario I outlined, he didn't. I'm a horrible artist, otherwise I'd draw you a picture. And again, I speculate about this as someone who truly DETESTS Manny Machado.
What I'm describing happens in almost every single MLB game. Player on 1st, teammate hits a ground ball to one of the infielders. Knowing he's about to be thrown out at 2nd AND that a relay throw will be made from 2nd to 1st to double up the batter, he veers to the left out of the way of the throw. As I said, it happens in virtually every game.
I'm not saying for certain that what I described IS what happened, and I certainly wouldn't put it past Machado of all people to intentionally get in the way of a throw, but I think my scenario is completely plausible too.
Now, returning to what this thread was SUPPOSED to be about.....John Smoltz STINKS as an announcer.
