And don't forget the story that has been out there for decades now that the reason Carter couldn't get the hostages out is that Republicans, including a very wealthy group from Texas, were literally paying the hostage takers NOT to release the hostages until after the election to help Reagan. the literal president of Iran said so in his book, he and Carter had negotiated the release but the group holding them refused to release them because they were being paid by American Republicans.
There's multiple stories on this out there.
Then governor Connally reportedly visited the Middle East and met with a group telling them don't release the hostages until after the election, Reagan will give you a better deal and we'll compensate you. Then a group in Texas headed by a wealthy oil tycoon did exactly that.
WIthin hours of Reagan winning the election, iran released the hostages.
