How do you define too many?

Maybe the nation is too big to begin with.

I honestly think a ratio of 786,000 to 1 is absolutely untenable.

Off the top of my head: multiply the number of representatives by 6. That gives you 2610 (play with it to make it an odd number if you will, I don't care; sometimes a tie is a tie). That will give you a decent 130,000 to 1 ratio, give and take. In line with western democracy standards.

Then keep the districts as they are (because apparently everyone is so wedded to them), but have 6 representatives for each. Set 1 aside for the winner, proportionally distribute the remaining 5 among parties according to their votes. This will have a radical impact on our politics instantly. I can't emphasize this point enough. Imagine no more having to agonize about redistricting or having to worry who needs to go unrepresented. Everyone gets a voice in the people's house.

Alternatively, shrink the districts to their 1/6 size. Like az said, then try to gerrymander that!

If you can't accommodate that many representatives inside the current Congress building, see if you can make some changes internally. If not, build another capitol somewhere else. The horse needs to go before the cart.

What good has the current house of representatives done for our democracy in the first place? They are still the backdrop for a dictator at the end of the day, aren't they?
