I am not criticizing them, or minimizing their tragic loss. It's just that there was really nothing they could do.
I don't think the nose was up at impact; if it was the cockpit would not have been crushed. The plane did not tip up into its final position until evacuation, when passenger weight became concentrated in the rear.
We'll get a better understanding after the NTSB investigation.
