they also seem to have a realistic sense of where we are. Maybe the "end of humanity" is a bit of hyperbole, but certainly the end of something. Something valuable even. The end of humanity as we know it, perhaps?

Hope is the opium of the masses, a bad habit of the mind that we can all grow out of eventually. :)
