First, I'm sorry you had to go through that experience. Even though it was years ago, I know how long-lasting the residual effects can last.
As for hope, I get what you're saying. But I do think it comes in many different forms. Certainly there is hope in the form of blind faith (like the hope for a miracle), there is aspirational hope, there is fantastical hope, and yes, there is a kind of hope that is well grounded. It's that last kind of hope that I was referring to in my comment above, when I mentioned that it can be motivating, etc. It really can have the kinds of effects I was referring to. Hope that is grounded in reality shouldn't be so easily dismissed, IMHO.
