It was the big thing in the Democratic Part politics as defined by Bill Clinton. It was supposed to be how Democrats were going to get out of their "malaise" by becoming Republican Lite. That's when the great abandonment of the working class began in favor of the newly emerging rich. When Hilary Clinton was talking about how the coal miners of West Virginia can become code writers in her 2016 campaign, she was referring back to that moment.

Then the veneer came off in 2008 and a lot of people began to see who our economic and political system is designed to really protect and support. That was the beginnings of the modern day progressive movement as we know it today, and I'd argue, also the populist movement on the right that later on got hijacked by Trump.


So yeah as the reality on the ground shifted, the understanding of what the stock market really means in American economy also did.
