Clinton could ride on (high popularities) a stock market rise (bubble?) and a growing economy in the 1990s. The Nation magazine may not have liked that, but they were mostly ignored.
Then there's the Great Recession, the stock market tanks 50%, everyone is blaming financial institutions and Occupy Wallstreet forms. What may have been "cool" in the 90s becomes scorned by progressives. My 403B did quite well from 2009 to 2012 (and years beyond that) as I guessed the market would rebound. But as to openly talking about that ... Well, did you notice how Obama avoided the subject, despite big market gains?
