Your note mentioned Bill Walsh and Joe Montana. I always mention the 49ers when I discuss this topic.
When Joe Montana was running the offense, he was statistically the best quarterback in the league. Joe eventually left and was replaced by Steve Young, who then proceeded to post the best numbers in the league. And when Steve Young was injured, he was replaced by Steve Bono (remember him?). And guess what - Steve Bono went 5-1 and was rated the forth best passer in the NFL.
The first two guys were great QBs, yes, but I don't think many people are going to put Steve Bono on their list of all-time greats.
So, yes, it's all about the system, and how each guy fits into it.
