Personally, I think whatever ‘personal’ issues he may have had were more likely than not as a result of his doing. Bottom line was he was paid very well to be the HC. I was a big Mora fan early on and he did A LOT for the program. He also had no issue getting raises every time his name was mentioned for other jobs.
Eventually there were things that just frustrated you as a fan. I saw him twice just go off on teenage ball kids. Against UNLV, they had the game well in hand, but instead of running the clock down, he left first string OL in and lost one for the year to injury. Why? Then there was the blow up on the sideline on TV with Ulbrich. UCLA really needed a DC to replace Bradley(?) and just didn’t do it. The constant penalties and Mora on the sideline just taking notes, but nothing ever got fixed. Then watching just about every sports announcer saying on national TV, the HC looks checked out. It just turned to anger as a fan.
I don’t know anyone that hated him. It just turned into just time to move on and just didn’t think about him much. As someone who really wanted Mora to succeed at UCLA, I just didn’t see anything that showed he could dig out of the hole he started.
If somehow Mora was an option for UCLA someday, I’d just want to know WTH happened and what would be different this time?
