By my reckoning, we've only had two halves where we've played decent ball - 2nd half v Hawai'i, and 1st half v. LSU, and we still had some issues in both.
I still want to see what this team can do if we can put it together. this is on a lot of factors, all of them correctable by the coaching staff.
What I think we need to do.
1. commit to running the ball - calling 4 pass plays to every 1 run play is killing us. (most of the Garbers runs are actually called passing plays)
1a. Do less read/rpo action on running plays - the RB's don't hit the hole hard and fast with the massive delays at the mesh point, and we need at least some plays where we just fire out and beat the crap out of the Defense hard. (this will also help the pass protection/play action).
2. get off the field on 3rd down - I think we need to go hard press man to man and blitz more on 3rd down, and live with getting beat a couple of times. the lack of pressure is getting us torn apart, and the long drives are killing the defense, as well as the offense.
3. WR's need to get open on time. I watch Garbers take a 3 step drop, and he should be firing as soon as his back foot hits on that third step. Instead, the ball doesn't come out for much longer. this tells me his first reads are covered.
4. I'd love to see us with a Harden/Jones backfield on some snaps. Play action to Harden, hit Jones out of the backfield, or have Harden as a blocking back for Jones, or have Jones motion to WR/slot and pull an LB out.
