It sounds like May told Mara he would be the starting center. Maybe Cronin was unwilling to promise him that even though in all likelihood he would have been. Different coaches may have different philosophies around these kind of things.
Supposedly a lot of top recruits and players are looking for promises of around starting and playing time.
Cronin doesn't seem like the type to do that. That said I am still a little bit skeptical because I find it hard to believe that Cronin didn't at least give him some assurances around role.
