As I said this morning, you’ll hear plenty of reasons why this happened—but none of them will be official. You’re unlikely to hear Mara’s side directly from him or Cronin’s side directly from him. In the end, people will believe what they want. The truth probably lies in a mix of factors.
Take playing time, for example. I can understand why Mara’s family would be concerned about that, just as I can understand why Cronin wouldn’t guarantee anything.
As for tampering, I don’t see it as anything more than Mara’s family trying to ensure he gets what he wants this time around. Playing time was an issue, and they’re trying to make sure it won’t be again. Honestly, I’m surprised so many on the board are worried about tampering. In today’s Wild West of recruiting, this is just the reality. With what essentially amounts to one-year contracts, of course players are going to hear what other teams can offer. And let’s be real—UCLA is likely doing the same thing through back channels.
