And I even posted that he might transfer immediately after the Tennessee loss where he was inexplicably benched for most of 2nd half. That upset some people here but looks like my sentiments were shared by his camp. Cronin’s handling of him all season was inexplicable and unconscionable (to extent anything sports related can be characterized as such.) if I was on his support team I’d be telling him to leave too. But I’m all ucla so I selfishly wanted him to return.
My guess is it’s a mix of both Cronin and money factoring into decision. Either alone was enough for him to want to leave and together probably a no brainer. Would you leave a million or more on the table for the opportunity to play for a coach who for some stubborn bizarre reason doesn’t appreciate your talent or bother to run plays for you?
Mara will get paid by a major program. I expect him to dominate college basketball and be an all American next year. Our chance at a title is gone. This is truly devastating news. We’ll see if Cronin can turn this around somehow but I was pro Cronin before the Mara treatment last season and now I would not be upset if he got the sack.
