I get the bit about the questions of his improving - or not.
But how many millions of dollars does Bona get for signing a two-way contract? Last I remember, pay is a whole lot less - believe I remember a figure of $500,000 to $1 million.
Yes, getting started now gets him into the NBA right away and that much closer to earning his second contract which is where the big money really comes in -- for those who succeed.
My concern is he moves himself into a position where he - a player with great athleticism but little ability to shoot and for two years even less ability to play without fouling - a lot - into a position where the weaknesses in his game come under a spotlight. Another year in college - at likely about the same pay level as a two way contract - give him a chance to. be featured and coached to improve in his areas of weakness.
I don't think it was a mistake for Jaime Jaquez Jr to stay in college a last year or the 23 year old the Lakers just drafted. There were several players drafted in this draft who were older - the current phrase is ready to contribute right away. As opposed to projects.
I just think the weaknesses in his game now could well work against Bona's chances to stick in the league. After last season it just doesn't appear he's ready to meet the challenge he just embraced. I wish him the best of luck. I hope you're right and he's a huge success. Good for him. But I'm just skeptical of his chances at this time. We'll see. It's certainly the decision so many of these kids make all the time - get to the NBA just as quickly as possible. The odds really aren't very good for them.
