if memory serves there were clearly bad decisions made by Howland, some stubbornness, some failures to adjust, and also some bad luck (which always has a play in competitive sports - especially team sports). Even though Howland's Bruins teams were loaded back then, I think Florida (both times) just had the better team, which you know doesn't always translate to victory, but it helps. And with Memphis, their great guard (name escaping me at this moment) was just a handful. If Howland had switch defenders it still wasn't a guarantee that he could have been curtailed. That team too IMO was perhaps also better than UCLA. Like I said, it's all a little fuzzy.
