I played on a base basketball team with Dr Ernie Vandeweghe while serving over in Germany in the late 50s. Ernie was serving his reserve time after leaving the NY Knicks. Ernie mentioned that they were expecting a new addition to the family sometime in mid summer. In fact, he had to leave one of our games at halftime in late May but it turned out to be a false alarm. But sure enough, his son and future UCLA and NBA star Kiki, was born a few months later in Wiesbaden.
I still have a photo of our team with Dr. Ernie in it. The coach was Shelby Metcalf who after he left the AF, went on to be Texas A&M's basketball head coach for 35 years--longest in the school's history.
