They could have left-they chose not to, because Cronin convinced them to stay and play for him. Which suggests that contrary to your irrational hatred, they didn’t think he was a mediocrity or an ass****.

He also recruited Clark, Bailey and Bona, who might have led us to another FF but for the injuries.

I get why you don’t like Cronin, but at least be honest with your criticisms.
