It's a remnant of the northern limit line, so whoever controlled land when the fighting stopped in the early 1950s retained title to the land. There are several South Korean islands in the area. It was a long trip, 5 hours on a ferry from Incheon. Lots of South Korean military presence on the island. It seemed like half the people on the island were soldiers. We saw several tanks stationed along the road, pointed at North Korea. I was there setting up some air quality equipment for the South Korean government, to assess pollution transport from China. The island is on a direct trajectory from Beijing to Seoul.
