They're always going to go through the motions to feel that they are free individuals, but when the time comes, they will heed the call and go back to where they feel they belong. They are a part of a herd, a hive, a cult. Being a part of this party and lining up with like-minded people is where they draw their personal strength and their calling. They tend to be externally oriented people in that sense.

So the best we can hope with that crowd is that they stay home.

BTW, this is exactly where I admire Liz Cheney. She is a rare breed, someone who is internally oriented. She has her beliefs (conservative as hell) but whatever they are, she does not deviate from them. She does not triangulate with the moods of the outside world, but lets her internal compass guide he. That's a personality type. Same with Kinzinger and others of that ilk, but the pressures on Cheney is much higher and yet, she does not stray from whatever her inner guide tells her. So for that she deserves a hat tip.
