Clearly people who live from paycheck to paycheck are going to have a hard time. Not everyone can save money, but a hell of a lot of people could find ways to save more.
As an extreme, I knew a successful doctor who always spent his huge salary and maxed his credit cards. Ate out several times a week at the most expensive restaurants around. Took lavish vacations every year. Now his widow is struggling and hoping her kids help enough so she doesn't end up homeless.
My kids are now serious savers, and I am happy about that.
And if I were teaching a class to college kids, I would stress the importance of saving. Not every one of them would be able to do it, but I would encourage them to try.
Like you said, compounded returns are powerful. Saving early in life is so powerful.
