And most of them are Red States. It's funny those Florida idiots attacking California.
According to ATTOM’s Mid-Year 2026 U.S. Foreclosure Market Report, there were 227,548 properties with foreclosure filings in the first half of 2026, up 21% from the first half of 2025 and up 28% from 2024.
That does not mean 21% of homeowners are being foreclosed on. The 21% is the year-over-year increase in foreclosure filings (default notices, scheduled auctions, or bank repossessions).
The 5 states where foreclosures are rising fastest
Among states with at least 500 foreclosure filings:
Rank State Increase vs. 1H 2025
1 Idaho +59%
2 Colorado +57%
3 Georgia +52%
4 North Carolina +47%
5 Mississippi +45%
But there's another way to define "worst." If you mean the states where foreclosure is currently most prevalent relative to the number of homes, the ranking is different:
Florida — 0.27% of housing units
South Carolina — 0.26%
Indiana — 0.25%
Delaware — 0.25%
Illinois — 0.23%
So, for example, Idaho is the fastest deteriorating, while Florida has the highest foreclosure rate overall.
