They set out to prove the existence of an invisible, undetectable substance that supposedly filled the entire universe.The Seemingly Impossible Goal In the 19th century, physicists knew that waves need a medium to travel through (like sound needs air). Because light travels through the vacuum of space, scientists assumed space must be filled with a friction-free, invisible fluid called "aether." Michelson and Morley attempted to measure the "aether wind"—the speed at which Earth plows through this invisible cosmic fluid.Measuring a completely invisible, ghost-like substance seemed impossible, but they built an incredibly precise instrument called an interferometer to split light beams and detect tiny shifts in speed.The "Failure" That Changed ScienceThe experiment yielded what is now called the most famous failed experiment in history: they found absolutely nothing. Light traveled at the exact same speed in every direction. There was no aether wind, and therefore, no aether.
