In world war 2 the US developed the capacity to deploy advanced base forces which could rapidly develop port facilities, repair shops, airbases, hospitals, shipyards, drydocks and other military facilities, which it used to greatest effect in the Pacific, where it constructed bases in the South and Central Pacific which had tremendous capabilities and kept the vast US Pacific fleet supplied, along with Marines and soldiers who fought land battles on scores of islands.
Ulithi was occupied as an isolated undeveloped atoll, but by the end it could serve as anchorage for 600 ships and kept the entire fleet supplied.
