Nearly every naval professional who wasn't a complete moron realized that battleships were obsolete no later than December 10, 1942, and many recognized this years earlier.
The United States laid down one battleship after that date, but suspended it a couple months later and then cancelled it.
No professional naval officer wants any of these relics and the Navy doesn't want the burden of crewing or maintaining them.
