The cost of debt service limits the money available to pay for the kinds of services and investments I favor.
HOWEVER, I don't agree that the solution to the debt is to cut government services. You are never going to address the deficit without tax increases.
There is a reason that Republican adminstrations are the worst for ballooning the debt. It is because every QOP adminstration has cut taxes without paying for them in any way. And the benefits go to the wealthy and corporations, which increases the wealth gap. They cut services for ordinary Americans while giving money to the rich. It's backwards Robin Hood.
BTW, the average American is not free from blame. They buy the idea that you can cut taxes without losing anything, and they elect politicians who promise that. Have your cake and eat it too!
In essence, the public wants all the government services and they don't want to pay for them. Meanwhile the billionaires want government largess, and they don't want to pay for it either. Everybody wants goodies, and they want someone to pay for them.
I am not recommending anyone run for office on this platform, but I think our taxes are too low.
