"Donald Trump said hostilities with Iran “have terminated” ahead of a deadline that would have required lawmakers’ permission to continue the war after 60 days of fighting. His administration has claimed that the ceasefire “pauses” this clock. Democrats have argued the law doesn’t allow for such a stop, noting that American forces remain deployed.
Earlier Mr Trump dismissed a new proposal from Iran for negotiations with America. The treasury warned shippers of sanctions if they pay tolls to Iran for passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Mr Trump has vowed to keep a blockade in place. After a turbulent week in oil markets the price of Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, fell to around $108 a barrel on Friday.
The Pentagon announced that it would remove 5,000 troops from Germany after a spat between Mr Trump and Friedrich Merz. Germany’s chancellor said on Monday that America was being “humiliated” by Iran’s leaders. Earlier Mr Trump said he would increase tariffs on cars from the EU to 25%, from 15% currently, and accused the bloc of “not complying” with a trade deal struck last year."
