I have traveled extensively throughout the South and Midwest in recent years. I'm a white guy so I can't relate personal experience, but I haven't observed any overt racism. Public places seem pretty normal, just people going about their business.
Off topic, if you make it to KC be sure to visit Arthur Bryant's for excellent barbeque. And if you can spare an extra half day in KC then visit the World War I Museum. It's an outstanding historical museum.
