My roommate (Asian) try to stay at a motel in a small town in Oklahoma. As he was settling in the room, the motel clerk knocked on his door and told him he had to leave. He explained some "trouble makers" in town warned him in so many words and he had no choice.

This was in the 80s. Imagine how exponentially worse it was for blacks. I recently learned about the Green Book which listed safe places for black people in the Jim Crow era.

10 years ago, my friend (white) visited an Arizona town with his coworkers some of whom were Hispanics. While they were at a night club, cops grabbed one of the Hispanic coworkers without identifying themselves on the dance floor. Of course, he fought back and they beat the shit out of him. The whole thing turned out to be a case of a mistaken identity, but he got charged with resisting arrest.

The case dragged on. He had to make the 800 hour drive several times to meet with the lawyer in town. It was obvious the lawyer was in cahoots with the local police. The case was finally settled with a plea deal.

This is why, even though I have a nerdy benign Asian face, I am weary of small towns. It could be a cop in a shitty mood looking for a fight after his wife refused sex. Police forces of small towns are notoriously corrupt.
