She already committed a major violation by accessing a child’s records without cause. That may be a fileable offense.
I also wouldn’t be surprised if the Trump administration pursues action against the comedian.
California is extremely careful in how it collects educational data. When asked directly, the state cannot provide the federal government with a list of undocumented students. However, it does use carefully designed profiling questions that allow the state to infer status when necessary—specifically to assess resource needs for undocumented students and to evaluate outcomes and success within that cohort.
At my college, those who work directly with undocumented students understand that their positions exist at the mercy of the Trump administration and that, at any time, their offices could be subject to a raid.
They are prepared for that reality. I find their resolve admirable.
