Her family had been in the States since the turn of the 20th century, but they got deported routinely. Mexicans were indiscriminately rounded up and deported. It got so routine that they became regulars of a law firm based out of Tijuana that did nothing besides helping American citizens re-enter the US. In one case, they re-entered with guest workers and ran afoul with the law for re-entering without following the proper channel as citizens. They got fined for it.
It's still happening.. Under Trump, it would be Deport First and Ask Questions Later.
So if you are white, you have nothing to worry about. If you are white, you are assumed to be native.
