I posted this decades ago. Seems obvious now, but people argued with me over it then.
I was stuck somewhere one day, in the mid-90's. My cousin was getting a masters in communications, so I picked up her text book. The forward talked about how we were going to be screwed by cable tv. More media outlets creates a market where each outlet can cater to niche views, and work the echo chamber for that view, creating compartmentalized worlds that people live in.
Additionally, I'd read an article about group dynamics that said that a group will generally take a more extreme view than any of its members started with. People want to stand out, and you get positive feed back for pushing the narrative forward, not pulling it back.
So, that was 20 years ago.
Seems like with any movement, if you're not staying on the leading edge, you could be seen as "not ___ enough"
And, now "Stochastic" is seen as a tactic. Definition of Stochastic: "having a random probability distribution or pattern that may be analyzed statistically but may not be predicted precisely." There is no guarantee that one's allies may not end up in that distribution pattern.
