I created a moderated website where people could have civil discussions without the invective. But guess what? Nobody wants to use it because most here get off on trashing their opponents because it makes them feel powerful and important. After all, there are some easy targets here.
As one astute observer commented:
. . . they have little power in every day life but when sheltered by the relative anonymous nature of the Internet they are able to safely act aggressive and brave. After all, unlike in real life, they are unlikely to get punched in the nose.
