"what political affiliation did the attacker have" questions, and that is, Americans by and large, are very very confused about politics. They tend to not see politics as a coherent set of ideas and a cogent worldview, but rather, as some kind of a team sport and cultural affinity. We are politically a very naive, underdeveloped, very novice nation partly because, I believe, the foundations of our cultural conditioning is individualism, which does not lend itself well to placing ourselves within a social context.

So almost anyone can be said to be of this kind of politics or that because most people are a bit of a hodge podge at some level.

At the end of the day, we tend to be an emotional people who are driven to violence mostly because we're pissed off at this thing or that for its own entirely idiosyncratic reasons rather than some grand principled position or tactical analysis.
