But at any rate, people who are not involved in it can simply stay silent or mumble things like how we need to let the process play out. They are going farther out than that.
And of course that's the kind of trap that Trump sets up to claim your soul without giving back anything in return. You go to bat for him once on a small lie (crowd size, for instance) and the fact that you lost gave an inch there means you now have to swing all the way to becoming his defender no matter what because you know your credibility is shot for good. There are a lot of people in the Republican Party who should in principle be able to sit this one out.
ANd then what about people who are not running for any office? Online trolls have nothing to lose by being quiet about all this.
