(or more likely, lack the genes that help moderate behavior) end up paying very dearly for doing so. We have not opened all the doors yet. We haven't had torture being instituted as a consistent policy. Citizens are not being thrown in jail or rendered overseas to other countries yet.

On a scale of fascism, 0 to 10, we're barely at 2, if that.

I'm at a music festival at Boise right now. Unlike other festivals I've been to in that past, you no longer hear artists politically posturing. Because sh*t got real. And when sh*t gets real, cheap heroism no longer works.

It is surprisingly easy to fantasize about heroically standing up to power when the stakes are low. Raise them a bit, and you can see why masses turn to a chickensh*t so quickly and so justifiably. This is especiallytrue, and I can't emphasize this enough, for people who have a lot to lose, i.e., the middle class who still gets some crumbs from late stage capitalism.
