my father had polycystic kidneys and was on dialysis for a number of years, he had both kidneys removed and was without a kidney for 6 months until he got a transplant.

Social Security used to issue payments for people on dialysis and that included children of patients - either while they were in college or of a certain age (not sure). So, my father signed me up while at UCLA, and I received a few scattered checks. When I called social security to ask about the missing checks, they told me that they were sent to my father's house and cashed. Got it. He needed the money more than me and I didn't ever mention it to him. Of course he cashed a check with his name on it.
