notably in their employment policies, highlighted by good wages and good benefits.
Costco’s roots began in the late 70s with an outfit called Price Club in San Diego, which was founded by a guy named Sol Price. His right-hand man eventually left Price Club to start up a similar company called Costco (I think with Sol Price's blessing). Costco was an exact replica of Price Club. Both retailers flourished, and in the early 90s the two companies merged under the Costco name.
I consider Costco to be a good example of how capitalism can work well. Costco flourished because Sol Price innovated new ways to do retail business. Examples:
- Shopping was limited to members
- The warehouse-type stores
- Inventory was limited to a small number of quality products (a typical Costco store today carries about 4,000 SKUs, while most supermarkets carry around 30,000 SKUs).
And most of all, Costco’s success is based on treating their employees well. Compare that to Walmart’s policies (remember the days Walmart’s new-hire policies included tutorials on how to apply for government assistance?).
I've long supported Costco, and never bought anything at Walmart until a few years ago. Moving forward, I'll use the Goods Unite Us info to guide my shopping decisions. Thanks for posting it.
