Unfortunately, playing QB is now a political matter. It's not about who wins the job. It's the guy that the fans want to win the job is the guy who wins the job. That guy gets the benefit of the doubt. That guy gets the practice reps. And it all snowballs from there. If the undercooked (but maybe more performant guy, all things being equal) guy does get a shot and doesn't light it up from the first snap, the fans (in their infinite wisdom) kvetch, "See? I told you he sucked. That's why we HAD to go all in on DJU! Generational talent!"
A coach bucking the conventional wisdom trend is taking a long unemployment walk off a short keep your job pier, and he better hope that everything goes right for the gutty little who performs better than Captain NIL throughout every practice and scrimmage and earns his PT instead of having it handed to him. Kicker misses FG after FG? It's the gutty little's fault...a REAL qb would've scored a TD.
