As a follow-up, you have no idea (nor does anyone else) why Ucla has a lot of applications. It likely has a lot to do with three major factors, none of which speak to the college experience provided by Ucla. One, the UC application system gives you 3 applications in one. If all applicants select Ucla as their second choice, they get the most applications without being the most preferred by any applicants. Hmmmm, better think about how numbers work....
Two, Ucla makes it clear they provide free...free...degrees to the right demographic groups. When something is free, you get more demand for it. Hence, Ucla likely gets a ton of applications from those demographic groups.
Three, Ucla encourages applications from China, not least because they pay full boat for their degrees. In all liklihood, Ucla receives a slug of Chinese applicants that others schools don't see.
Stop using your imagination to fill in the gaps of a picture you've already drawn in your head. That picture where Ucla is some shining city on a hill where the special college experience can be had and where charity is the dominant ethic. You're not seeing reality, you're watching a movie your wrote on a screen in your head.
