If it was 1998, a car dealership could have paid Cade McNown millions to do commercials. They’d get something out of it.
Today, I hear collectives paying players to come play for their school. That’s reality. Maybe the athletes are actually doing endorsements, autograph signings, etc. but I haven’t really seen or heard much of that actually happening. I’ve seen the gymnasts from UCLA and LSU make money on their own. Even when you read posts here, it’s about needing to get more money for the collective and how best to distribute that money based on position need. Sure sounds like pay to play and federal and state usually figure out how to get their piece.
